One in five respondents in English-medium schools and 23% in Irish-medium schools, understand that there are
support classes available in some places for non-curricular heritage languages outside the schools, either privately,
as complementary weekend classes or embassy supported courses. The fee-paying voluntary secondary sector are
most likely to know of heritage language support classes outside school (32%) and the community and
comprehensive schools are least likely to be aware of these (15%). Larger schools are more likely to be aware of the
classes than smaller schools, 24% of larger schools as opposed to 16% of smaller schools and girls’ schools are 5%
more likely to know of the classes than boys’ schools.
