CLIL in Transition Year French - A Cross-Curricular Approach to Language Learning
How did you plan for it? How did you organise it?
The project began in 2018 following Erasmus+ jobshadowing visits to a French lycée, where teachers
observed History-Geography classes taught through
English using CLIL methodologies. Inspired by these
experiences, the French department collaborated with
subject teachers to co-design a CLIL module tailored
to TY students.
Key planning steps included:
•
Identifying curriculum links between French and other
subjects, and perceived gaps between Junior and Senior
Cycle content in those subjects, or topics that could beneot
from additional input.
•
Co-teaching sessions with History and Geography teachers.
•
Developing thematic units (e.g. World War I, European identity) delivered in French.
•
Working with PPLI through the CLIL pilot project and subsequent CLIL opportunities.
•
Participating in eTwinning projects and student exchanges with a school using CLIL in France, and expanding
the Erasmus+ job-shadowing projects to include teachers from a wide range of subjects.
The module now includes 5–6 hours of instruction per week through French, with a strong emphasis on active
learning, project work, and European studies.
