Recognising and Valuing Home Languages in Our School
How did you plan for it? How did you organise it?
To help our school community renect upon the roles of languages and culture in our school, we used the school
self-evaluation toolkit ILAOS prepared by Post-Primary Languages Ireland and Dublin and Dun Laoghaire Education
and Training Board (DDLETB).

A sense of belonging
In order to foster a sense of belonging, teachers were asked to
familiarise themselves with the cultural and linguistic proole of
their classes. They were also asked to show, through their words
and actions, that the languages of learners are both valued and
valuable in our school.
A language board was created and students were invited to
write on the board in their home language. Students were
encouraged to describe Christmas traditions in their home
countries and to display that content, similarities and contrasts,
on the languages board. A map of the world was displayed and
students were invited to mark their home country or country of
heritage with a pin.
Home Languages, as well as the curricular languages taught in school, are recognised and celebrated in our
#ThinkLanguages festival and during Languages Week.
The Home Languages of our student community are acknowledged and celebrated in Assembly every Friday,
through a greeting from our principal.
Our school community is mindful of the linguistic dioculties that some parents may face when communicating with
our school. The school website has now been translated into multiple languages. Parents were also invited to attend
a multicultural cofee morning.
