Recognising and Valuing Home Languages in Our School
Experience success in our school
Facilitating EAL students to use translation apps in lessons and during exams provides opportunities to demonstrate
knowledge, despite a lack of Cognitive Academic Linguistic Proociency.
Students experience success in the classroom and can communicate their knowledge of material they have studied
in their house exams.
Heritage language support classes are timetabled for students in 5th and 6th Year, who are exempt from studying
Irish. Such students have opportunities to work on their heritage language. This provision is particularly beneocial
for those who speak languages which are examined at Leaving Certiocate level. It ofers students a chance to
maximise the points they could potentially achieve by successfully completing a Leaving Certiocate exam in their
heritage language.
How was the project successful?
By recognising the fact that individual literacy and cognitive abilities do not equate with nuency in English, and by
identifying and sharing appropriate information and support across our school community, students are now
empowered to feel that they too can learn meaningfully and have their learning adequately assessed, alongside
their peers who speak English as their orst language.
We are a bilingual country. We are a multilingual society. Woodbrook College proudly represents a diverse school
community.
In recognising and valuing home languages in our school, we have thoroughly embraced diversity in our learning
community and this is to the beneot of us all. Multilingualism is now viewed as a valuable asset to our school and
not a problem to be oxed.
