Foreword
The six plans contained in this booklet are provided to support teachers delivering the Say Yes to
Languages module in Irish Sign Language (ISL). This ten-hour module is ofered to pupils in 5th and
6th class and is delivered during normal school hours.
The Say Yes to Languages module aims to:
• Raise awareness of the importance of modern foreign language education to build transversal skills
• Prepare the ground for the implementation of the redeveloped Primary Language Curriculum
• Encourage uptake of foreign languages at post-primary level
• Support implementation of Languages Connect, Ireland’s Strategy for Foreign Languages in
Education 2017-2026
• Improve literacy in English and Irish
The order in which the plans appear in this booklet is only a suggestion, and some teachers might
prefer to follow a diferent sequence. However, the order follows the progression of the sections of
the pupils’ Language Passport and teachers are invited to encourage pupils to engage with its relevant
sections as they progress. Teachers might ond that some additional material is required, such as videos
of specioc vocabulary, images, or nashcards. Teachers are invited to consult the additional links
available for download from our website.
Each plan contains a selection of activities to suit various learner needs targeted at 5th and 6th class.
Most importantly, teachers and tutors should encourage pupils’ spontaneity by creating a safe space
where all attempts are rewarded, with an emphasis on communication over accuracy. All pupils
should be given a voice and a chance for their languages to be heard and seen. Finally, teachers will
be supported in the delivery of this module through collaboration with other teachers, as well as
with parents and guardians.
