Rationale
Languages play a vital role in helping young people understand themselves, communicate and
connect with others, and engage confidently with an increasingly interconnected world. In
Ireland, linguistic and cultural diversity is a growing feature of schools, communities and
workplaces. Developing an awareness of languages and cultures equips students with
valuable life skills, broadens perspectives and prepares them to participate actively in society.
#ThinkLanguages is a national celebration of languages and cultures promoting the personal,
social, cultural and professional benefits of language learning. The initiative encourages
young people to recognise the value of multilingualism, intercultural understanding and
global citizenship.
This micro-module provides students with opportunities to explore the languages and
cultures present within their school, local community and wider world. Through investigation,
collaboration and active participation, students examine how languages shape identities,
build relationships, foster inclusion and create opportunities for education, travel and
employment.
