Using the Third Language (L3) in the Primary Classroom - Key Words and Phrases V3 - Flipbook - Page 2
Introduction
This resource has been developed to support primary teachers in enacting the Language
Specification within the redeveloped Primary School Curriculum. It complements the
learning associated with Communicative Competence in the third language (L3) by providing
practical classroom language and guidance to support regular, meaningful interaction and
communication, while supporting children’s progression towards the relevant Learning
Outcomes.
The examples included are provided in French, German, Italian and Spanish, as our research
shows that these are the languages spoken by the majority of primary school teachers in
Ireland. They are not intended to limit schools’ choice of L3. Schools may choose any L3 in
line with their available resources, the current language competencies of teachers and the
home languages represented in the classroom or school community.
At Stage 4, children begin to communicate at a very basic to basic level in the school’s L3.
This is supported by continued work on building an awareness of languages and cultures.
The words and phrases in this resource are intended to help teachers create regular,
meaningful opportunities for children to hear, recognise and use the L3 in familiar classroom
contexts.
