Key Words and Phrases: Using the third language (L3) in the primary classroom
Ideas for adaptation and extension
❯ Regularly review how language is being
used in the classroom and identify
opportunities to expand the bank of
words and sentences. Gradual expansion
of the range of L3 used can encourage
more spontaneous interaction and
communication.
❯ Use tools such as online dictionaries or
translation platforms to check meaning
and usage, model accurate
pronunciation, compare alternative
expressions, and build an ever-growing
personal bank of classroom language.

❯ Support the children in making
connections between language learning
in English, Irish, the L3 and home or
other languages, and other subject areas
across the curriculum. For example,
children can notice how languages
connect across the curriculum: Italian
words such as piano and crescendo are
used in music; Greek letters such as pi
(π), alpha (³), beta (´) and delta (Δ) are
used in mathematics; and words such as
habitat are shared, or used in very similar
forms, across many European languages.
